An Emergency

This morning was quite an adventure. I am so very glad I was able to have my dear friend Ica with me through such an experience. I spent this morning at the hospital. Why? you might ask... Well I shall tell you (and then you can get mad at me in the comments...)

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you were at a public event and something happened? What would you do in the mass chaos of an emergency? I found out today...

8:00 this morning found me discussing today's activities with Ica. Its her last week before she leaves me again for the summer and I am going to miss her. We had some fun stuff planned. :)

8:30 Ica is at my house, we are on our way to see an exciting game at the stadium. We needed to be there early for good seats! And boy what an exciting game it was too! the ball was moving so fast, you could hardly see it! *phew* it makes me tired just remembering it...

Not long into it (I don't recall exact time because I didn't have my phone with me...and I don't wear a watch...) a police officer came up to us and asked us if we had seen anything suspicious. They had received a report that there might be something dangerous at the stadium and that it was supposed to be around where we were...

Next came in the men in funny outfits... completely decked out in their head-to-toe gear, gas masks the whole shebang! I couldn't help but think of the CDA in Disney Pixar's Monster Inc.

They filed us out according to medical needs and put us through a detox trailer. Yes, I had to strip my clothes off, use a scrub brush and rinse off... they gave me a little towel to dry off with... it is a good thing I was wearing my swimsuit under my clothes this morning! *phew*

We were put onto a bus where we were taken to the hospital to be treated for any symptoms we might have. Boy what a fun experience that was! :) I was given one of those scandalous robes, put into a wheelchair and wheeled into the emergency room. It was like an episode of ER... I asked for my mom and they told me they would find her for me, but needed some information and wanted me to tell them what was wrong. I told them that it hurt to take deep breaths... and that my eyes burned a little... but that I really needed my mother...

A nice young intern brought in a warm blanket for me, as I was still shivering and told me to hold the oxygen mask to my face to calm my breathing so they could get me ready for a better examine... Turns out I'm fine... but I did decide that if it was a real emergency and not a drill, I would have died in a wheelchair...

Ok, so it wasn't a real emergency... there wasn't even a game... I tried to make it sound a lot more exciting than it actually was. But it was interestingly fun to play a victim! Although I do kinda wish I could have had a scenario that was unconscious... they got to ride on gurneys
and in the ambulances... next time... for sure...

Ica was 28 weeks pregnant with contractions and nausea... no she is not pregnant for real... but I did decided we need to work on that pregnant walk if she is ever going to need assistance again... no one seemed to believe her...

Me, I was a 28 year old female who has red eyes, and complains that it hurts when she takes a deep breath. She is a little disoriented and no one seems to know who she is or where she's from. She keeps asking for her Mom. Pretty exciting eh? it did get me into the red medical group behind the 16 yr old who was experiencing intense abdominal pain, and the 2 pregnant ladies...

But my eyes were opened today about how important it is to be prepared. The volunteers for this drill were the nursing students (hence why I got involved, as Ica is going to be a nurse...) But I have a better idea of what goes on and what I need to do if an emergency should ever occur. In short (or maybe not so short) it was a great learning experience for me and I hope to participate again.

Do you ever feel...

Mad? Not like, "angry" mad... but like... this...

Yep... definitely crazy mad...

So I need to write but don't really know what to write about... I guess an update wouldn't be too far out of the question seeing as my posts lately have been terribly short...

Life has been rather crazy the last... since school started. I began the semester full of enthusiasm for the semester ahead. Excited about all that I would learn and maybe have something to apply to my life! *gasp* (Is that possible?!) About three weeks into the semester I was hit with the first challenge... 3 tests and a project due. Not too bad, I can handle a little stress...

As the snow fell through the end of January and all through February so did the tests. Since the semester has started I have taken 17 tests averaging about 3 per week. I have also printed about $20 worth of paper to turn into various classes...With the sunshine this week I began to see the light at the end, unfortunately the snow came back and with it... 4 tests next week and three projects due. (I have about 10 more tests to take before finals begin...)I haven't even begun to work on my large projects... I've not had any time... But all will be finished in due time...

Despite the workload that has fallen on me this semester, I am enjoying life. (ok not the snow so much anymore) They Olympics were fun to keep track of, I followed Noelle Pikus-Pace rather closely... and LOST has been my weekly break from my computer and books... My husband is amazing and very patient with me as I struggle through these dang nutrition classes. And he doesn't mind me spouting off what I learned that day in Old Testament or the trivia I learn in History... (which can be a lot sometimes). We've been taking some much needed breaks from studies to go on a few random adventures.

In fact this weekend Bryce is taking me to see Vocal Point (BYU's best a Capella group) and his sister is performing with her singing group in Roosevelt this Saturday. So it looks like another snowy trip over the mountain. :) I am excited to see her perform. She has one of the most amazingly delicious voices you will ever hear. I swear I get goosebumps every time she starts singing! (I'm getting goosebumps now just thinking about it!) The wedding is coming up on the 12th! Just a week away and I am so happy for the most adorable couple and am so very proud of their choice to start of right. :)

Our little house is turning green (not with envy but with holiday Spirit) and I will find the time to throw a little green feast on the 17th. I am looking forward to spring. (less than a month before my birthday!) Well, this post is long and boring enough... Being this busy I am beginning to go a little mad...

Speaking of mad... is anyone besides me excited for the movie coming out this weekend?

Adventure to the Y... almost

A sad truth in my life is one that I don't tell many about... I have lived in Orem all my life and in Provo for 2 years now... I can look up at the Y on the mountain every day and know that I am not lost... and yet I have never hiked to it. Its true...

The gate leading to the trail head...

The adventure to undertake wasn't officially planned...(this was the day before I started work at This is the Place... just to give you an idea.) Bryce and I just decided to go up one night upon finishing our pizza. Bryce told me there were a couple of switch backs... it wouldn't be too bad. So I decided I would try to accomplish a very big milestone in my life. Turns out, spontanious ideas only work sometimes...

We got to the first turn and I was panting rather hard. I had to sit on the convienient bench they had placed for me there. After I caught my breath again I decided I could make a couple more to reach my goal. I needed to get into shape... right? We got up to the second turn and my leg muscles were screaming very angrily at me... so I sat again, and told Bryce I could go no further this time if I was to start working tomorrow, I didn't want to start sore and tired. He tried to tell me we were about half way and that I could make it but I told him "another night" and "someday."

This is me and Bryce at the first turn... I am still happy and optimistic at this point...

This story has a twist... I passed the sign that showed the trail... there are 10 turns all together for the shorter hike... yes, I only made it to the second. So my attempt was more of a failure than a success. But on the bright side... I got closer than I ever have... right?

The proof that I made it as far up as I did... plus, 2 turns is high up, that parking lot is where we left my car. What a great view it is from up there!

Cupcakes Can Kill You

BYU A Capella Club presents: The A Capella Jam!

A collection of different Barbershop and A Capella groups got together to perform for their audience. BYU is known as a "hotbed" for this type of music and as one could imagine, the groups were amazing! I did feel like Simon on American Idol... Bryce and I ended up discussing the different strengths and weaknesses with each performance, but I did thoroughly enjoy myself.

One of my favorite groups is a group of 9 girls who call themselves Noteworthy. They were AMAZING! Their harmony and blend was so in tune with each other that it was hard to recognize that you were not listening to music... just voices. Their percussionist, Courtney, was better than some men I have seen. As a girl, that talent is very hard to come by. I was very, very impressed. Their second song was an arrangement of Come, Come Ye Saints and when they sang I had goosebumps appear all over! I could just feel the song... *sigh* it was great!

Another performer was a sort of "one-man-band". His performing name is Mr. Tim and he is actually has shows in Vegas... (don't worry he's family friendly...) Tim had his apple computer there and demonstrated a live looping with himself to sing a song with himself... it was absolutely amazing and really fun to watch. His last song was all about how cupcakes can kill you. It was pretty funny... and he had close to 10 different things looping around with his song. During his song he had a ninja fight on stage with a hostess cupcake. He won, but only barely... It was pretty good. If you are interested, the link to that particular song of his is below...

Anyone who is familiar with music groups at BYU is also familiar with the group called Vocal Point. It is the top A Capella group that comes from our university. They, of course, were the finale group. For their first song they started out in the audience and came up like zombies while starting the song "Thriller". Their choreography was phenomenal and I forgot that I was listening to A Capella, not music... I am still trying to wrap my head around it! :D Of course their numbers were amazing and we had them on for an encore... Their encore piece was a Russian song that I have found on youtube.com. Its as good as I can find to show you how amazing this song was. I was very impressed.

(the musicians are a little creepy... but the singer is absolutely amazing)

Anyway, That's a whole lot of nothingness... just me babbling on... Maybe one day, I'll write something significant here... but what fun is that?

P.S. At least its a little new culture right?
